yes they are androids, they are trying to discover there past, its supposed to be an evolution theory, first bacteria, then fish, then mammals, then humans finally androids.

Aside from reading it in a press statement, there was no real way to tell that those things at the end were androids. So if the filmmakers really wanted to make some sort of statement about evolution, it would seem necissary to at least hint at it in the FILM, not spell it out in a press statement.

P.S. Whatever anyone thinks about A.I., no one could possibly say that ending was good. Ugh. Kubrick is rolling over in his grave.
